History

Paris Exhibition of Art and Industry 1839

The King and the Royal Family, in their visit to the Exhibition of 1839, stopped in front of the Pleyel Exhibition of pianos, listening to Kalkbrenner playing a wonderful and beautiful Instrument by this famous French Maker. After speaking to Camille Pleyel about the instrument, the Duchess of Orleans, step daughter to the King of France, purchased this magnificent pianino.

Transcripts from the Musical Gazette of Paris 1839

“During the last visit of the Duchess of Orleans at the Exhibition, her Royal Highness stopped long time in front of the piano of Mr. Pleyel. She made the acquisition of a vertical piano made with rosewood. This piano had just been played by Mr. Kalkbrenner”

“for this exhibition he made a piano with so pure sound, so large and so harmonious, that the Duchess of Orleans, after listening to it, under the fingers of Mr. Kalkbrenner, decide to buy it right away”

“We saw one who was surpassing (the pianos) all that Mr. Pleyel made in this kind. Then the Duchess of Orleans, glad of the fabulous sound of this instrument, that she purchased it”

All articles and transcripts form the archives show this piano as being Serial number 7391, the one you will see posted on this site. This Pianino Pleyel has been used by Olivier Marechal in a recording of Chopin’s Waltzes;
